National Health Center Week is an opportunity to celebrate and raise awareness for the work that community health centers do across the country. In Iowa, community health centers provide high-quality, cost-effective healthcare services to nearly 245,000 Iowans at 103 sites statewide. Using an integrated care model, CHCs provide primary medical, dental, behavioral health and pharmacy services, often under one roof. And with a sliding fee scale, CHCs ensure all Iowans have access to care.
CHCs save American taxpayers $28 billion a year in health care costs and save Medicaid $2,371 per person when compared to other providers. In Iowa, CHCs provide care to 15% of the Medicaid population, but represent only 2% of Iowa’s total Medicaid expenditures.
In addition to supporting the economy and ensuring access to affordable, quality healthcare, community health centers also use innovative methods to provide Iowans access to necessities like food, housing, transportation, interpretation and more. Iowa’s community health centers are at the forefront of the health care system in addressing social drivers of health.
