Financial/Grant Accountant- Des Moines, IA

PURPOSE OF POSITION 

This position will assist the Director of Accounting and Financial Analyst with financial accounting duties such as collecting, analyzing, investigating and reporting financial data in order to ensure all commitments are met and contribute toward our goal of delivering quality service to the Iowa Primary Care Association, INConcertCare, and IowaHealth+ and their partners and members.  

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

The following duties are normal for this position.  These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive.  Other duties may be required and assigned. 

General Ledger 

  • Prepare regular and timely reconciliation of accounts to ensure accuracy. 
  • Prepare monthly accruals. 
  • Prepare journal entries for appropriate adjustments to balance sheet and income statement accounts. 

Accounts Receivable 

  • Review monthly invoicing for coding accuracy. 
  • Review payment applications while maintaining strong internal controls. 
  • Monitor accounts and follow up on uncollected accounts receivable to ensure adequate cash balances. 

Accounts Payable 

  • Maintain proper internal controls in financial vendor management. 
  • Review coding for adherence to budget and federal funding guidelines for accounts payable invoices and credit card charges. 
  • Review purchase orders, quotes, or contracts and resolve discrepancies. 
  • Preparation and distribution of annual IRS Form 1099 for applicable payees. 

Payroll 

  • Review payroll distribution and ensure appropriate documentation is compiled. 

Grant Management 

  • Assist in generating all reporting associated with designated awards. 
  • Assist in addressing all financial needs and questions; developing and maintaining budgets and forecasts; providing oversight for projected balances, expenses, and payroll; spending levels. 
  • Manage cash flow associated with designated awards, including preparing invoices, draw-downs and reports associated with these functions. 
  • Understand grant level budget to actual variances to communicate with grant managers and respond to questions. 
  • Proactively communicate and collaborate with program managers to provide necessary financial data timely and accurately. 

Reporting 

  • Prepare and distribute monthly financial reports to directors, program managers, leads and managers. 
  • Assist in preparing monthly finance committee reports including cash forecast and financial analysis reports. 

Special Projects and Analysis 

  • Assist Director of Accounting with scheduling, facilitation and drafting meeting notes for Finance Committees, CFO work group and APM Finance work group. 
  • Maintain company contracts, vendor agreements and quotes, ensuring appropriate filing convention and document retention. 
  • Handle highly confidential information with discretion, including payroll. 
  • Complete special projects as assigned, which may include but are not limited to assistance with the annual audits, preparation of the Forms 990, assistance with budget preparation, bookkeeping and compliance reporting for Iowa Primary Care Association and related and contracted entities. 
  • Assists with providing staff training on internal finance processes/procedures. 
  • Continuously evaluate, propose and implement improvements to make financial and accounting processes more effective and efficient.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES 

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.  

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with at least 2 years of experience in an accounting or audit role or four plus years of experience in a full cycle accounting role that involved preparation of journal entries 
  • Knowledge of standard accounting practices and procedures. 
  • Demonstrated high proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly with Microsoft Excel. 
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.  Interacts effectively with staff across the organization. 
  • Attention to detail and ensuring accuracy of data. 
  • Ability to take direction and perform successfully both independently and as a team member. 
  • Ensures compliance with accounting standards, grant requirements and internal policies and procedures in all activities performed. 

Language Skills: 

Ability to read and interpret documents, operating and procedure manuals.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.  Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of an organization.   

Mathematical Skills: 

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. 

Reasoning Ability: 

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. 

Computer Skills: 

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including spreadsheets, word processing, and databases.
