What made you decide to come to a community health center? There is often a great opportunity to impact the health of those in our society who are most in need of good health care and health education. They may have difficulty getting in to a regular providers ofc office. While the ACA has been put forth as making sure everyone has health insurance, some still fall through the cracks and may find themselves temporarily without health insurance. In many health care settings this would inhibit their ability to see a provider, but in a CHC, care is still provided.
What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center? I work with a great group of people who are helpful and supportive.
Why should others choose a community health center? If you are interested in primary care, looking for a wide variety of etiologies and hae a desire to make a difference in the lives of people, this is a good place to be.

Provider: Dr. James Demmel

Why do you love serving at Promise? I love providing primary care to a population that really needs primary care and is appreciative. We can coordinate and treat mental health and direct patients to specialty care as needed. These patients then come back to us when they are done with the specialist. I have enough time to exercise, garden, travel and barbeque at nights and on weekends.

What made you decide to come to a community health center? I wanted to work with an underserved population to help the community. I was born and raised in Clinton, IA so it means a lot to me to be a part of such a great organization helping those in need.
What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center? Seeing the differences we make both big and small each and every day. Also, the team! It takes everyone’s support to provide the best care for our patients. Teamwork truly does make the dream work!
Why should others choose a community health center? Helen Keller said it best, “alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.” What good is a healthcare system if people can’t access it or afford it? Community Health Centers help serve the community and provide culturally competent, high-quality, comprehensive primary health care services. For many people, community health centers are the only resource they have for access to any healthcare.

What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center? There are so many reasons! I am grateful to be part of an amazing organization. I truly feel that I have a work family and that every position in the team is as integral as the next. I feel so privileged to get to be part of making our community a healthier place. It is so rewarding to be a small part of helping others access healthcare that may otherwise go without it. I love celebrating the triumphs with our patients and supporting them as we work towards better control of their medical conditions.
Why should others choose a community health center? This is the most rewarding place I have ever been part of. Community Health Centers are many patient’s first and only access to health care, whether it is for preventative or chronic care. Being in a position to help manage complex medical conditions and provide so many comprehensive services that would not otherwise be accessible is what makes community health centers so unique. How awesome to get to be part of that!!

What made you decide to come to a community health center? I came to work at a CHC because that was the only employer in this area for NP's. While at the time I started there was another smaller clinic that was owned by an NP that a job was offered to me at as well, I liked the idea of being able to serve/see patients from all walks of life, private insurance versus self-pay/slide versus state insurance without discrimination.
What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center? I keep coming back every day because I can see what a huge difference I have the ability to make, not just as a provider but also as a member of the community. I like the diversity of my patients, my coworkers, and the CHC's ability to meet so many needs in house (DXA, mammo, labs, behavioral health, counseling services, dental, vision, etc). We are great at lowering or decreasing barriers and improving access to care!
Why should others choose a community health center? Others should choose CHC's because of their ability to meet so many needs and the dedication of the staff to meet such as wide spectrum of needs

What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center?  Knowing what a difference we make in the health of the community.

What made you come to a Community Health Center? I was looking for my “final resting place” in medicine, close to my family—in a diverse community where the need was great. I wanted a practice that was run efficiently and compassionately where I could contribute.
What keeps me coming to work every day at our Community Health Center? The dedicated colleagues I work with—they inspire, motivate and challenge me. They also support me and are involved in the daily joys and sorrows of caring for others. The most compelling reason I keep coming back—the PATIENTS! The diversity in this population is unmatched in any of the practices I have worked with in 32 years of pediatrics. The stories that I hear from these children and their parents are unique, awesome, and I’ll say it, jaw-dropping at times. Because of this diversity, the medical care feeds my need to learn and evolve as a good physician.
Why should others choose a Community Health Center? Patients and Providers, choosing a Community Health Center will be the best decision you ever made! The Community Health Center model, in my opinion, is one of the answers to the Health Care Crisis. The CHC offers a top notch Medical Home with Providers who are not burnt out, because of an administrative and operational model which is efficient and offers solutions to the need for comprehensive care. Consultation orchestrated by a Primary Care Provider who KNOWS the patient and the medical, social, and mental health resources of the area makes good use of health care dollars. The TIME you are given to spend educating the patient about preventive care and appropriate use of Clinic, Urgent Care and the Emergency Department also makes judicious use of health care resources more likely.

Most of all, when you as a health care worker pack up your bag at the end of the day, there is always a sense of purpose and satisfaction that you have spent your time, talent and heart improving, in a meaningful way, the lives of those who entrusted their care to you.

In my experience, the CHC allows me a way to get my hands on the issue of health care as a Human Right, and the opportunity to get my arms around some very amazing people! I saw a sign held up by a Provider at a rally for health care as a Right that says it all: “The blood on my hands washes off!” If you want to be part of the solution, and you are looking for compassionate, personal, competent care—there’s no better place than a Community Health Center—and we NEED YOU!

What made you decide to come to a community health center? I came to the RHCHC because of the opportunity to work with other Nurse Practitioners and physicians. There is opportunity to help a variety of patients who otherwise could not afford health care and to provide education in health care. I enjoy the variety of cultures, with patients and staff. There was also opportunity for loan repayment for my education.
What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center?
I have a good team to work with. My nurse is helpful in anticipating my needs, good computer skills and eager to learn. My Medical Assistant is able to prepare the patient thoroughly as well as interpret for the Spanish speaking. Between the three of us, we are able to provide good care for the patient and answer their questions.
Why should others choose a community health center?
It is very challenging to help persons that have such a cultural variety. I learn a lot from them. The patients seen at the center are generally very appreciative of the care given. Our center is good at providing the supplies that are needed and there is a good team effort to provide the best care possible.

What made you decide to come to a community health center? I grew up in a rural, small area that didn’t always have access to quality health care at affordable cost, so when River Hills came into Appanoose County, I was excited for the community. I have watched them grow, expand, and along the way offer more services to the community. It was then that I knew I wanted to work for a community health center, and I wanted it to be River Hills. When I was asked to join River Hills as a provider I felt fulfilled, like I had landed where I was meant to be!
What keeps you coming to work every day at our community health center?
I am excited to come to work every day. I get to work with amazing people (Amanda Smothers, Rachel Pfiefer, Dr. Hilger, etc.) that put the communities need above all else. I feel fortunate to be among those people that continue to want to service our communities and be there for them in their times of need.
Why should others choose a community health center? A community health center thinks of the community first and foremost, always with the intent of providing quality healthcare to people that may not have access to these services without a community healthcare center. I feel like a community healthcare center is healthcare for the right reasons, not with the single goal of making a buck!
